I think LGBT Activists are needed a lot on today's society, as they have been needed in all times of mankind. It's true that in the past the LGBT community faced even harsher treatment than nowadays but that doesn't mean that we don't still need people who defend the Queer community from unequal or rude treatment.
I know now about this activist called Harvey Milk who made a change not only for himself but also for lots of people instead of just being a passive bystander, he stood his ground even with thousands of people hating him and I admire that a lot. He was a man who changed so many things and his name still lives on until today, when people from the LGBT community can thank him for all he did in the past… he was even assassinated for doing the things that he did but I bet a lot of people are grateful for his right-doings in the past days. This persona, Harvey Milk, is truly a definition of what the word “admirable” means and I think more politicians should follow his steps and care for the minority too.
Also I really like Rick Mercer’s rant about Teen Suicide in the LGBT community, he says everything just the way it is, with facts and a strong way of talking encouraging everyone to be like Harvey Milk and other activists and stop being passive about abuse and take a step forward in a more active role of stopping this nonsensical bad treatments towards gay, bi, trans or lesbian teenagers.
I think it’s really important to have this kind of people, activists “active” people who stop acting like there’s nothing wrong and like everything is good and alright because it’s not. I’m glad that we have people who are not afraid of saying what they think even in public and fight for what is right even if they are fighting alone, I really admire them and I hope that I can contribute in some way for this cause; for starters, I will act the way Rick Mercer said we should: raising our voices when we see abuse and help the people who are being treated unfairly.
There’s a lot of people who also helped in Canada: Brian Burke, Libby Davies, Douglas Wilson, Mark Tewsbury, David Corbett and El-Farouk Khaki so I want to do what they did in Canada in my home country, Mexico. I am only just one girl but they also where at some time “just one man” or “just one woman” so I know that a difference can be made even if you are just one person.
